53 yr f. has pain on inner left thigh near groin. Feels similar to sciatica. but is not. Had hernia surgery, but hernia was not cause of pain, since after 6 wks pain is worse. Frustrated and my GP is not much help. Not sure who to see next. Please help.

This really sounds like a strained adducter(muscle that pull your leg inward) muscle. It attaches right in the groin area. However, it may be due to a compensation because of the hernia or it might be due to a misaligned pelvis.
I would really recommend that you see a chiropractor that specializes in muscle work. They can correct the misalignments and also work on that groin muscle.

To make the muscles flexible you need specific stretches for the stiff muscles. I did stretches as shown at the link below and am perfectly fine now. You may also get benefit.
