I’m 19 years old and I just have few questions about sciatica…
Can you get rid of sciatica once and forever? If so, how?
is the only way of getting rid of sciatica surgery?
Do i have to get a MRI to diagnose this condition?
What should i talk to the doctor about? How do i explain my pain?
sorry too many questions. but i’m so nervous and i don tknow why this is happening to me….and why so early in life.

i also had sciatica that started when i was about 19-20 yrs old. MRI/X-ray are the only ways that i know of diagnosing it. You can talk to your doctor about options for pain. true sciatica really doesnt go away completely. the pain i had would start in almost my neck and shoot down my spine and then branch out when it got to my rear end.
Hope this helps. anything else feel free to send me an instant message.

your piraformis muscle might be constricting the sciatica nerve. Deep Massage, strengthening that muscle, ETPS(www.acumedmedical.ca… u can call and get a list of physical therapist, massage therapist, and DR’s who can get you treatment in your area) I had sciatica and all of the above got rid of it. Everyone is different…. a cheep way to massage it is to lay down on a tennis ball under your butt….where you feel it’s really sore…around the middle of the cheek…is ur piraformis. Let the tennis ball massage it by moving around on it….it may be painful at first but it can release the muscle. To strenghten it… lay on your back ….knees up….feet on floor, and squeeze ur butt cheeks together… can lift ur butt up when u squeeze.

Only about 10% of patients with sciatica actually have to go to surgery. Usually the disc dehydrates, shrinks back off the nerve root and you get better. ( the reason some claim their machine has an 85% success rate?)
You do neet the MRI, tho, because there are things other than bulging or herniated discs that can cause radicular pain ( a better term than sciatica)
Radicular pain is sharp, stabbing , increased by coughing and straining, radiating down (usually) the back of the leg, made worse by bending over with the knees locked.
Important that you describe carefully the nature of the pain you have, what makes it better, what makes it worse, is there any position you can get into for comfort. These are questions they almost always ask about ANY pain, so know the answers ahead of time.
If you have a herniated disc, it is because of weakness of the ligaments that contain the disc. This is likely the case all the way up the spine. A good PT program to strengthen the muscles of the back will help prevent your getting another one. Learn good body mechanics- how to lift. etc.

Your Dr would normally send you for an x-ray of the lumbar spine. Many reasons to have sciatic. Don’t think about surgery.
Orthopedic Dr’s have also confirmed tight low rise hip hugging jeans may also be a cause of this condition.

In addition to what’s already been said, I think you have to give up on the “why” part. It’s happened and you have to deal with it. I’m sorry it happened to you so early in life, but you may never really know why…
