  Your spine really is the centerpoint of your body. Without it, well, you certainly wouldn’t be able to do much…

  I certainly would not run with a herniated disc, nor would I do much walking either. The key to allowing your body to heal (and most of the time, if not nearly all the time, a herniated disc requires corrective surgery and a recovery time of 4-6 weeks) is not overexerting yourself. Take it easy and follow your doctor’s orders.

  Also, if this continues to be a problem, you may want to research Degenerative Disc Disease.

  you can do many normal things with a herniated disc, you just have to use a great deal of thought before you do things. I would recommend you swim rather than run, because it will not cause any further injury to your back.

  LMAO You should not be in the hospital if you have a herniated disc. I had one last summer. It hurt so bad all I could do was writhe around in agony on my bed. It hurt to shower, to move, to do anything. My doctors knew what was wrong, but were in no hurry to operate. They finally did a few months later….when I woke up I was fine, and also I could pee normally for the first time in months. Doctors don’t consider a herniated disc an emergency. Oh and to answer your question…..NO. I am a hiker, and when I first started having issues with my back, exercise just made it worse.

  try using an over the counter antiinflamitory medicine such as Naproxen a few hours prior to running. This will help reduce any swelling that might occur.

  It really depends on how it effects you after you run. If you have no problems, go for it. The disk is not going to get any better no matter what you do. It could get worse but then, that is “Could” Go ahead and run.

  Check with your Doctor – After my surgery, he said I was limited (lifetime) to lifting no more than 75 Lbs. He also said that I should try to avoid extreme active sports that could include jaring of the body.

  He did tell me that Walking would be the best exercise but he did not rule out running (post surgery).
